Uno de los momentos más íntimos de Violator (1990), el álbum que catapultó a Depeche Mode al estrellato mundial. "Waiting for the Night" es el quinto corte del disco, escrito por Martin Gore, y contrasta con la energía de "Personal Jesus" o "Enjoy the Silence" con una atmósfera lenta, casi hipnótica.
La canción nace de la fascinación de Gore y el productor Flood por Tangerine Dream: quisieron crear una secuencia similar usando un ARP y su secuenciador. El resultado es un tema construido sobre capas de sintetizadores y una cantidad brutal de delays. De hecho, cuando en 2006 remasterizaron el álbum, el ingeniero Kevin Paul reconoció que fue de las canciones más complicadas de reconstruir: contaba con unos 15 delays distintos repartidos entre voces y batería.
Curiosamente, muchos fans la conocen erróneamente como "Waiting for the Night to Fall", pero ese nunca fue el título real. Gore explicó en una entrevista de 1990 que la letra habla de esperar la noche como una especie de "alto perfecto y natural", un refugio frente al día.
El videoclip oficial, dirigido por Anton Corbijn (colaborador habitual de la banda), acompaña esa quietud con imágenes en blanco y negro muy en la línea estética que Corbijn definió para Depeche Mode en esta época.
Versión destacada: la banda sueca Ghost (entonces Ghost B.C.) grabó una versión para la edición japonesa de su álbum If You Have Ghost (2013), con Papa Emeritus II al frente. Es una relectura oscura y teatral, muy fiel al espíritu original pero con ese aire satánico tan suyo.
