Clutch acaban de sacar single nuevo, y es una noticia importante para los que seguimos a esta banda de Maryland desde hace años. "The Drifter Returns" es el primer adelanto de lo que será su decimocuarto álbum de estudio, el sucesor de Sunrise on Slaughter Beach (2022). La canción llegó acompañada de un lyric video oficial, no hay de momento videoclip como tal.
Clutch llevan más de tres décadas en esto. Neil Fallon (voz), Tim Sult (guitarra), Dan Maines (bajo) y Jean-Paul Gaster (batería) se conocieron en el instituto Seneca Valley, en Germantown, Maryland, y salieron de la misma escena hardcore que dio a bandas como Bad Brains o Minor Threat. Con los años derivaron hacia un stoner/hard rock con mucho groove, siempre con las letras excéntricas y verborreicas de Fallon como sello de la casa. Ya habían tocado el tema en directo antes de publicarlo en estudio.
Sobre la letra: la canción arranca con una referencia directa a las Georgia Guidestones, ese monumento de piedra en Georgia (Estados Unidos) rodeado de teorías de la conspiración desde los años 80, que fue volado con una bomba en 2022. A partir de ahí, el protagonista de la canción, "el drifter" (una especie de vagabundo errante que ya había aparecido en canciones anteriores de la banda), narra sentirse perdido tras esa destrucción, e incluye una confesión religiosa que sale mal y termina, según la letra, mandándolo derecho al infierno. Todo con la flow rápido y torrencial de Fallon, típico de él, encima de riffs enérgicos.
