Christopher Cross - Arthur's Theme

Tema principal de la película "Arthur" (1981), protagonizada por Dudley Moore y Liza Minnelli. Ganó el Oscar y el Globo de Oro a la mejor canción original.

Curiosidades: la canción no la escribió Christopher Cross solo, algo poco habitual en él, ya que prefiere componer en solitario. La compuso junto a Burt Bacharach y Carole Bayer Sager, en casa de estos en Beverly Hills. En un principio se pensó en el propio Cross para componer toda la banda sonora de la película, pero el director, en su primer largometraje, prefirió no arriesgarse con otro debutante y cedió el trabajo a Bacharach.

El verso más recordado, el de la luna y Nueva York, no lo escribió ninguno de los tres. Se lo debemos a Peter Allen (exmarido de Liza Minnelli), que lo había compuesto años antes para una canción inacabada junto a Bayer Sager, y que se le ocurrió mientras su avión esperaba turno para aterrizar en el aeropuerto JFK. Por eso Allen también figura como autor.

Gracias a este tema, Cross sumó su segundo número uno en EEUU (tras "Sailing") y de paso desbancó del primer puesto a "Endless Love", la otra gran balada nominada esos días al Oscar.

Versión a destacar: para el remake de 2011 de "Arthur" (con Russell Brand), el grupo Fitz and The Tantrums grabó una versión más moderna del tema, que se libró de las críticas que recibió el resto de la película.

Lionel Richie - Stuck On You

En 1984, en plena cresta de la ola con su álbum "Can't Slow Down", Lionel Richie sorprendió a todos con un giro hacia el country. "Stuck On You" fue el cuarto single de ese disco y su primera incursión oficial en las listas country, llegando al puesto 24. En la portada del sencillo aparecía con sombrero de cowboy, algo insólito en él hasta entonces.

Curiosidades:

- Llegó al número 3 en Billboard Hot 100, al número 1 en Adult Contemporary (su séptimo número uno en esa lista) y también entró en las listas de R&B y country, algo poco habitual para un mismo tema.

- Según Songfacts, en su momento no se hizo videoclip para MTV porque se consideraba que el tema, algo "demasiado adulto", no encajaba con la parrilla del canal.

- La canción se ha usado en varios anuncios, incluido uno de Pringles en la Super Bowl de 2022.

- Richie ya tenía experiencia con el country: en 1980 escribió y produjo "Lady", número uno para Kenny Rogers.

Versión a destacar: el cantante de reggae británico Trevor Walters la versionó apenas tres meses después del original, en 1984, y su versión llegó más alto en el Reino Unido (top 10) que la de Richie.

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" se publicó en junio de 1980, un mes después del suicidio de Ian Curtis, y se convirtió en el epitafio involuntario de la banda. Curiosamente, el título nació como una respuesta irónica a "Love Will Keep Us Together" de The Captain & Tennille (originalmente escrita por Neil Sedaka). La canción se grabó en los Strawberry Studios de Stockport, el mismo estudio donde años antes se había grabado aquella canción a la que respondía con tanto sarcasmo.

La letra habla del matrimonio de Curtis con Deborah Woodruff, marcado por su infidelidad, su relación con la periodista belga Annik Honoré y el deterioro que le provocaba la epilepsia que padecía. De hecho, Deborah hizo grabar el título de la canción como epitafio en la lápida de Ian.

Musicalmente supuso un giro respecto al sonido crudo de "Unknown Pleasures": el bajo agudo y melódico de Peter Hook lleva el peso de la canción, mientras los sintetizadores de Bernard Sumner apuntaban ya hacia el sonido más electrónico que después definiría a New Order. El productor Martin Hannett, pese a su fama de exigente, llegó a considerarla la obra maestra de la banda.

El videoclip, grabado por la propia banda semanas antes de la muerte de Curtis, se rodó en un estudio de ensayo de Manchester. Se abre con el nombre "Ian C." escrito a mano en una puerta, algo que muchos fans leyeron después como un presagio.

Fall Out Boy grabó una versión acústica para el EP "My Heart Will Always Be the B-Side to My Tongue" (2004), muy distinta al original pero con buena acogida entre sus fans.

Crown Lands - The Fall

Crown Lands es un dúo canadiense de rock progresivo formado por Cody Bowles (voz, batería, flautas) y Kevin Comeau (guitarras, bajo, teclados). Se les compara constantemente con Rush, y no es casualidad: su sonido bebe directamente de la época de "A Farewell to Kings" y "Hemispheres", con esa voz aguda al estilo Geddy Lee y guitarras que recuerdan a Alex Lifeson.

"The Fall" pertenece a su álbum "Apocalypse" (2026), un disco conceptual que funciona como precuela de su anterior trabajo "Fearless" (2023). La historia gira en torno a Blackstar, un personaje que se alza al poder dentro de una organización militarizada llamada "the Syndicate", y "The Fall" es uno de los momentos clave de esa narrativa, con versos como "I feel Blackstar closing in, and the seas are rising".

Musicalmente es de los temas más accesibles del disco: un riff de guitarra contundente que abre la canción, un estribillo pegadizo y varios solos cortos de Comeau con un aire más cercano a David Gilmour que a sus habituales referencias de Rush o Led Zeppelin. La crítica lo destaca como una de las pistas más "radio-friendly" del álbum.

Un dato curioso: el disco se grabó casi en su totalidad en el propio estudio casero de la banda, con la colaboración puntual de los productores Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters) y David Bottrill.

L'Impératrice feat. Fabiana Martone - Danza Marilù

Danza Marilù es uno de los adelantos del álbum Pulsar (2024), el cuarto disco de L'Impératrice, banda francesa de pop y nu-disco formada en París. Es la primera vez que el grupo incorpora voces invitadas en un álbum, y en este tema comparten protagonismo la voz de Flore Benguigui (cantante de la banda) con la de la napolitana Fabiana Martone, cantando a dúo en francés e italiano.

La canción es un himno para que las mujeres, de todas las edades, se muevan libremente en la pista de baile sin importar las miradas que puedan recibir. Musicalmente es un guiño directo al italo-disco, con guitarras y sintetizadores sobre una base de bajo funk, dentro de ese sonido reconocible de "French Touch" que caracteriza al grupo.

El videoclip, dirigido por Arthur Sevestre, fue nombrado Vídeo Musical de la Semana por los Berlin Music Video Awards, que destacaron su coreografía elegante y sus movimientos sincronizados que reflejan el groove pegadizo del tema, con un toque de absurdo divertido.

L'Impératrice está formada por Charles de Boisseguin y Hagni Gwon (teclados), David Gaugué (bajo), Achille Trocellier (guitarra), Tom Daveau (batería) y Flore Benguigui (voz). Su nombre significa "La Emperatriz".

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" es un clásico de 1983 de la cantante galesa Bonnie Tyler, incluido en su álbum "Faster Than the Speed of Night". La canción fue escrita y producida por Jim Steinman, colaborador habitual de Meat Loaf, y estuvo cuatro semanas en el número 1.

Curiosidades:

- Gran parte del éxito de la canción se debió a su videoclip, grabado en el sanatorio Holloway de Inglaterra y dirigido por Russell Mulcahy, el mismo director del primer vídeo emitido en la MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star" de The Buggles.

- En 2023, el videoclip alcanzó los mil millones de visualizaciones en YouTube , todo un hito para la artista.

- En 2017, durante un eclipse solar total, Tyler interpretó el tema en un crucero de Royal Caribbean acompañada por DNCE, la banda de Joe Jonas, justo en el momento de la totalidad del eclipse.

- Un año después, en 1984, Tyler tuvo otro top 40 con otra producción de Steinman: "Holding Out for a Hero", del soundtrack de Footloose.

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" es el tema que abre "Urban Hymns" (1997), el tercer álbum de The Verve, y se convirtió en su mayor éxito internacional. La base de cuerdas que reconoces al instante no es original: procede de una versión orquestal de 1965 de "The Last Time" de los Rolling Stones, grabada por la Andrew Oldham Orchestra (el proyecto del entonces mánager de los Stones, Andrew Loog Oldham).

Ahí empieza la parte más curiosa de la historia. The Verve pidió permiso para usar ese sample, pero Allen Klein, dueño de los derechos a través de ABKCO, consideró que habían usado más fragmento del acordado y los llevó a juicio. El resultado fue durísimo: la banda tuvo que ceder el 100% de los derechos y royalties a Mick Jagger y Keith Richards, que pasaron a figurar como autores de la canción. Richard Ashcroft, el cantante y verdadero autor de la letra y la melodía, llegó a cobrar solo 1.000 dólares por un tema que generó millones. Durante años bromeó diciendo que era "la mejor canción que Jagger y Richards han escrito en veinte años".

La historia tuvo un final feliz: en 2019, más de veinte años después y ya fallecido Klein, Jagger y Richards decidieron devolver a Ashcroft todos los derechos de autor y renunciar a su crédito como compositores. Ashcroft lo anunció el mismo día que recibió el Ivor Novello a toda su trayectoria.

El videoclip también es icónico: un plano casi único donde Ashcroft camina por una acera de Hoxton, Londres, empujando y chocando con la gente que se cruza, sin apartarse nunca de su camino. Lo dirigió Walter Stern.

Linkin Park - In the End

Cuarto y último single de "Hybrid Theory" (2000), publicado en octubre de 2001. Es la canción más reconocible de Linkin Park y una de las que definió el nu metal de los 2000.

La base la compuso Mike Shinoda en su estudio casero, tan sencilla que ni siquiera tenía título: en los archivos de la banda figuraba como "Untitled". A Shinoda no acababa de convencerle, la encontraba demasiado suave y "pop" para un disco pensado como una descarga de energía. Fue el batería Rob Bourdon quien, al escucharla, se emocionó y dijo que era la canción más especial del álbum, lo que convenció al resto.

La letra nace de las vivencias de Chester Bennington en su adolescencia, marcada por el acoso y los problemas familiares. El riff de piano que abre y sostiene toda la canción también es de Shinoda, que además lleva el peso de las estrofas rapeadas antes de que entre la voz de Bennington en el estribillo.

El videoclip lo dirigieron Joe Hahn (el DJ de la banda) y Nathan "Karma" Cox. Aunque parece rodado en pleno desierto, en realidad la banda tocó sobre un plató en Los Ángeles con efectos CGI añadidos después; el fondo desértico se grabó aparte durante el Ozzfest de 2001. Al final del vídeo activaron tuberías de agua sobre el escenario para empapar al grupo. Hoy supera los 2.000 millones de visitas, una de las dos canciones de la banda en llegar a esa cifra.

Ganó el premio a Mejor Vídeo de Rock en los MTV Video Music Awards de 2002.

Chevelle - Self Destructor

Self Destructor es el primer single de Niratias, el noveno álbum de estudio de Chevelle, publicado en enero de 2021. Alcanzó el número 1 en la lista Mainstream Rock de Billboard, la sexta vez que la banda lo consigue.

El tema fue escrito por Pete Loeffler, líder de la banda junto a su hermano Sam. Aunque la letra parece hablar directamente de la pandemia y los antivacunas, Loeffler contó que la canción se escribió en 2019, antes de que nadie supiera del COVID. Según explicó, surgió de una conversación con alguien que negaba la ciencia de forma muy insistente, y de ahí nació el concepto de self destructor.

Curiosidad: la canción suena en la película Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021). Y James LaBrie, cantante de Dream Theater, la eligió como su canción favorita de ese año.

El álbum fue producido de nuevo por Joe Barresi, quien trabaja con Chevelle desde Hats Off to the Bull (2011).

Steel Panther - The Mother's Day Song

Steel Panther están de vuelta. "The Mother's Day Song" es su primera canción original en tres años y marca además su fichaje por el sello Frontiers Music, tras dejar atrás su anterior etapa discográfica. La banda californiana, formada por Michael Starr, Satchel, Spyder y Stix Zadinia, sigue fiel a su estilo: riffs directos de glam metal, estribillos pegadizos y ese humor desvergonzado y exagerado que les caracteriza desde sus inicios en el año 2000.

Como su nombre indica, el tema es un homenaje (a su manera, claro) a las madres, publicado coincidiendo con la celebración del Día de la Madre en Estados Unidos. El videoclip, dirigido por su colaborador habitual J.T. Arbogast, es una recreación paródica de la mítica actuación de The Beatles en el programa The Ed Sullivan Show: la banda aparece vestida de traje, tocando sobre un fondo blanco, con toda la ironía y el exceso habituales en sus vídeos.

Sobre su fichaje por Frontiers, el grupo no se cortó ni un pelo al bromear en su comunicado sobre las "atenciones" recibidas del sello, en la línea del humor grueso que define su carrera desde Feel the Steel (2009), el álbum debut que incluyó colaboraciones de Corey Taylor (Slipknot), M. Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold) y Scott Ian (Anthrax), entre otros.

Testament - Return To Serenity

Return To Serenity apareció en 1992 dentro de The Ritual, el quinto álbum de estudio de Testament. Fue un disco bisagra para la banda: dejaron algo de lado el thrash más bruto de sus primeros trabajos para explorar un sonido más melódico y técnico, dentro de la línea que ya habían empezado a insinuar en Practice What You Preach y Souls of Black. El batería Louie Clemente llegó a decir que este álbum sonaba "más lento" y más orientado al heavy metal clásico, frente a la furia pura de The Legacy.

La canción está firmada musicalmente por Eric Peterson, con letra de Chuck Billy, Del James y el propio Peterson. Fue grabada en Los Ángeles bajo la producción de Tony Platt, en un proceso que se alargó más de lo habitual para el grupo: hasta entonces solían sacar disco cada año, pero con The Ritual se tomaron su tiempo tras el agotamiento de la gira de Souls of Black.

Un par de curiosidades: una versión editada de Return To Serenity cerró el EP en directo Return To The Apocalyptic City (1993), y la canción también quedó inmortalizada en el álbum en vivo Live At The Fillmore (1995). Con los años se ha convertido en una de las piezas más queridas del repertorio de Testament, con versión acústica incluida.

Pretty Maids - Savage Heart

Savage Heart es una de las canciones más conocidas de Pretty Maids, banda danesa de hard rock/heavy metal formada en 1981 en Horsens por Ronnie Atkins y Ken Hammer. El tema apareció originalmente en el álbum Jump the Gun (1990), publicado por CBS/Epic. A pesar de llevar más de cuatro décadas en activo y haber compartido escenario con nombres como Black Sabbath, Deep Purple o Alice Cooper, Pretty Maids nunca terminó de dar el salto al gran público, quedando siempre como una de esas bandas de culto dentro del género.

Una curiosidad: en 1993 la banda grabó una versión acústica de Savage Heart para el álbum Stripped, surgido tras el buen recibimiento del EP acústico Offside (1992), pensado inicialmente para el mercado japonés.

Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better

Cuarto y último single de "Currents" (2015), el tercer álbum de Kevin Parker bajo el nombre Tame Impala. Es, con diferencia, la canción más escuchada del proyecto, superando los mil millones de reproducciones en Spotify.

Lo curioso es que casi no existe como canción de Tame Impala. Parker la compuso pensando en regalársela a Mark Ronson para su disco "Uptown Special" (el mismo que incluye "Uptown Funk"), pero Ronson la rechazó. Parker se la quedó y la terminó en una sola noche.

El tema es un giro hacia el funk-disco que al propio Parker le costó aceptar: llegó a decir que le parecía "un poco cutre" para un disco de Tame Impala, con una letra "tonta" y un groove igual de tonto, pero que le encantaba ese tipo de música de todos modos. La grabación se convirtió en una obsesión: aseguró haber hecho más de 1.000 tomas vocales.

Sobre Trevor, el rival amoroso que da nombre a media internet de memes: Parker ha confirmado que no existe, que es solo un nombre que rimaba bien con el resto de la letra.

El videoclip mezcla animación dibujada a mano con acción real y transcurre en un instituto, con un jugador de baloncesto sufriendo un desamor en los vestuarios.

Otu - Seasons Change

Otu es un músico y productor finlandés al frente de Moonic Productions, su propio estudio. Se hizo viral en YouTube por sus versiones metaleras de clásicos del pop pasados por el filtro de System of a Down: "Barbie Girl", "La Isla Bonita", "Toxic" o "Aserejé" reconvertidos en himnos de riffs pesados y voz nasal a lo Serj Tankian. Ese proyecto de coñas metaleras se llama "Moonic Of A Down".

"Seasons Change" es un single propio de 2026, alejado de esas parodias: aquí Otu presenta composición original, mostrando su faceta de multiinstrumentista y cantante versátil.

Un dato curioso sobre él: nació sin la mano izquierda, algo que no le ha impedido dedicar más de veinte años a componer, producir y grabar música para bandas, videojuegos, anuncios y creadores de YouTube.

Polyphia - Playing God

"Playing God" es el primer single del álbum Remember That You Will Die (2022) de Polyphia, banda instrumental de Texas formada por Tim Henson y Scott LePage. La canción es puramente instrumental, sin letra, así que esta entrada se centra en la guitarra y la historia detrás del tema.

Lo curioso es que esta no iba a ser la canción de presentación del disco. Originalmente el single iba a ser Chimera, pero esta se filtró antes de tiempo y el videoclip de esa canción, que fue el más caro que había grabado el grupo hasta entonces, no terminó de convencerles. Ante la filtración, Tim Henson decidió cambiar de planes y adelantar Playing God como primer corte.

Polyphia se caracteriza por mezclar técnica de guitarra extrema con sonidos de trap, pop y rock progresivo, algo que se nota perfectamente en este tema, lleno de riffs imposibles y cambios de ritmo.

Versión que merece mención aparte: la interpretación "unplugged" de Tim Henson tocando el tema en acústico, en un solo plano y sin cortes, se ha convertido en su vídeo más visto, superando incluso al clip oficial. Es una demostración brutal de técnica.

The Divine Comedy - Achilles

Neil Hannon lleva años cargando con esta canción. La escribió cuando tenía 43 años, tras leer un artículo sobre el poema "Achilles in the Trench", escrito en 1915 por Patrick Shaw-Stewart, un joven clasicista que lo compuso mientras esperaba embarcar hacia Gallipoli en la Primera Guerra Mundial. Hannon tomó prestados algunos de sus versos, los mezcló con sus propias reflexiones sobre la mortalidad y lo intentó encajar en dos álbumes anteriores sin éxito. No fue hasta "Rainy Sunday Afternoon" (2025) cuando la canción encontró su sitio, con un arreglo que él mismo describe como una mezcla entre Morricone y Cash.

El videoclip lo dirigió Raphaël Neal, colaborador habitual de The Divine Comedy, que optó por un formato de tableaux estáticos en estudio, sin narrativa convencional, donde un soldado de la Primera Guerra Mundial se imagina a sí mismo como Aquiles. Neal lo considera el mejor trabajo que ha hecho para el grupo.

Eslabón Armado y Peso Pluma - Ella baila sola

Marzo de 2023. Pedro Tovar, cantante y compositor de Eslabón Armado, tenía una melodía que no sabía muy bien a dónde llevar. Contactó a Peso Pluma por redes sociales, le cantó parte de la canción por teléfono (sin mandarle grabación, literalmente cantándosela al oído), y quedaron en meterse al estudio. Dos minutos y cuarenta y cinco segundos después, el mundo del regional mexicano ya no sería el mismo.

"Ella baila sola" salió el 17 de marzo de 2023 como primer single del álbum Desvelado y en cuestión de días era tendencia en TikTok, donde Tovar había subido un adelanto en sus historias de Instagram. Lo que ninguno de los dos esperaba es que se convirtiera en la primera canción de música regional mexicana en entrar al top 10 del Billboard Hot 100, llegando al número 4, y en encabezar el Billboard Global 200 durante seis semanas. Primera vez para el género en ambas listas.

Técnicamente es un sierreño, no un corrido, como Tovar se encarga de aclarar cada vez que puede. El sonido mezcla requinto, charchetas, trombón de válvulas y tololoche, instrumentos que cada artista aportó por separado sin forzar nada. "Cada uno hizo lo suyo y se convirtió en su propio estilo", diría Peso Pluma.

Superó los mil millones de reproducciones en Spotify antes de que acabara 2023. Rolling Stone la incluyó en su lista de las 500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos (puesto 402) y la situó en el número 64 de las 250 mejores canciones del siglo XXI, describiéndola como un himno "ágil, épico y embriagador". La canción fue escrita por Tovar por pura imaginación, no desde la experiencia propia. Él mismo la considera la más fácil que ha escrito en su vida.

Steven Wilson , Ninet Tayeb - Rock Bottom

"Rock Bottom" pertenece al álbum The Harmony Codex (2023) y es uno de esos temas que justifican por sí solos escuchar el disco entero. La canción nació como una demo de guitarra que Ninet Tayeb le envió a Wilson, y él la transformó por completo: la convirtió en una especie de tema de James Bond orquestado y épico, con arreglos de cuerdas imponentes y un dueto vocal que parte en dos. La propia voz de Ninet repitiendo "don't lose hope, stay alive" tiene algo que se te clava.

Ninet Tayeb es una cantante israelí con la que Wilson lleva colaborando desde Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015), donde ya apareció en "Routine" y "Ancestral". Su complicidad es evidente: se complementan de una manera que pocos dúos consiguen.

El videoclip, dirigido de forma muy contenida y perturbadora, muestra a los dos atados con cuerdas en una habitación anónima. Incómodo y efectivo.

Led Zeppelin - No Quarter

"No Quarter" aparece en Houses of the Holy, el quinto álbum de estudio de Led Zeppelin, publicado en 1973.

La canción fue concebida principalmente por John Paul Jones, y es una de las pocas de su catálogo construida enteramente sobre su visión, dominada por el piano y el mellotron. 

El título procede de una antigua expresión militar: sin cuartel, sin prisioneros, sin piedad. Plant construye una narrativa en torno a guerreros vikingos en una misión peligrosa, igual que hizo antes con "Immigrant Song". 

Ninguno de los cuatro miembros habló nunca públicamente sobre el significado de la letra, algo inusual si pensamos en la cantidad de entrevistas que dieron sobre "Stairway to Heaven" o "Kashmir". Ese silencio parece deliberado. 

En directo, la canción se convirtió en el centro de los conciertos de Zeppelin desde 1973 hasta casi el final de su carrera. Jones improvisaba con el teclado e incorporaba fragmentos de música clásica, y la versión llegó a superar los veinte minutos. 

En cuanto a versiones, la más llamativa tiene su propia historia: en 1994, Page y Plant se reunieron para un especial de MTV y decidieron llamar al proyecto No Quarter: Unledded. Grabaron en Gales, Londres y Marruecos, mezclando folk acústico, blues e influencias de música africana. Jones se enteró del proyecto a través de los medios mientras estaba de gira en Alemania, y no lo recibió precisamente bien. El especial fue el episodio más visto de la era Unplugged en MTV.

UFO - Lights Out

"Lights Out" es el tema que abre y da nombre al sexto álbum de UFO, publicado en mayo de 1977. La canción surgió de una sesión de jam colectiva, con todos los miembros del grupo aportando su parte, según recuerda el propio Phil Mogg. 

Mogg escribió la letra como una canción anti-autoritaria, aunque su compañero Paul Raymond pensaba que trataba sobre la huelga de los mineros. Lo que sí parece claro es que el grito "Lights out in London" funcionó como metáfora de una ciudad al borde del caos.

La versión definitiva del tema no es la del disco, sino la que aparece en Strangers in the Night, el directo grabado en Chicago en 1978 y considerado uno de los mejores álbumes en vivo del hard rock. 

El álbum Lights Out fue el de mayor éxito comercial de la banda en Estados Unidos, llegando al número 23 del Billboard 200. 

Además, fue el primero en incorporar arreglos de cuerdas y estructuras más complejas, con el productor Ron Nevison al mando. 

Vale la pena también escuchar la versión en directo del Strangers in the Night, donde Michael Schenker lleva el riff a otro nivel:
