Marc Cerrone era un baterista francés que se convirtió en uno de los grandes arquitectos de la música disco electrónica. "Supernature" (1977) abre el álbum del mismo nombre, también conocido como Cerrone III, y es posiblemente su obra cumbre. La canción nació casi por accidente: un fabricante estadounidense le prestó un sintetizador ARP que él no sabía utilizar, y mientras trasteaba con las perillas encontró la línea de bajo que lo cambió todo.
La letra, firmada por Lene Lovich (futura reina del new wave británico, aunque aquí sin acreditar), cuenta una historia de ciencia ficción con trasfondo ecologista: la humanidad manipula la naturaleza con pociones químicas, y las criaturas que viven bajo tierra se rebelan y toman venganza. Cerrone se inspiraba en noticias reales de la época: el primer bebé probeta, el desastre de Seveso, los organismos modificados genéticamente. El título del álbum en un principio iba a ser "Malligator", como el sello discográfico.
Casi cincuenta años después, la canción volvió a sonar en todo el mundo durante la ceremonia de apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos de París 2024, interpretada por una orquesta sinfónica de 150 músicos. Cerrone, con 72 años, dijo que fue el mejor trabajo de su carrera.
Vale la pena escuchar también la versión que grabaron Erasure en 1989, publicada como cara B del single "You Surround Me". Andy Bell y Vince Clarke le dan un toque synth pop que encaja perfectamente con el espíritu original.
