"Tears of the Dragon" es el primer single del segundo álbum en solitario de Bruce Dickinson, "Balls to Picasso", publicado en 1994, justo después de abandonar Iron Maiden. Líricamente, la canción describe los sentimientos de Dickinson sobre su marcha de la banda.
La canción fue rechazada por Iron Maiden en su momento. Dickinson la había compuesto con la idea de que entrase en lo que habría sido "Somewhere in Time", un disco que él quería que sonase muy diferente, con toques acústicos. La banda pasó. Él la guardó y años después se convirtió en una de las mejores canciones de su carrera en solitario.
En una entrevista, Dickinson la eligió como su mejor canción: "Yo diría 'Tears of the Dragon', porque no sé lo que significa. Pero habla sobre algo, porque realmente afecta a la gente. Me afecta a mí. Sé de qué se trata: se trata de abandono, de abandonarse al universo."
Es además la única canción de "Balls to Picasso" que Bruce escribió y compuso completamente solo.

Vale la pena mencionar que en mayo de 2026 se publicó un nuevo videoclip para una versión reimaginada de la canción, con arreglos orquestales, rodado en una antigua cervecería de São Paulo junto a la orquesta Almai y la bailarina de ballet Renata Bardazi. El vídeo ya ha ganado el premio al Mejor Videoclip en varios festivales de cine internacionales.
