Gerry Rafferty es conocido sobre todo por "Baker Street" (1978), ese saxofón que se te queda grabado para siempre. Pero tenía mucho más. "The Right Moment" aparece en "Sleepwalking" (1982), su quinto álbum de estudio, y es una de esas canciones que llegan sin avisar.
"Sleepwalking" fue un disco de ruptura para él. Cansado de tres álbumes seguidos con el mismo productor, Hugh Murphy, Rafferty fichó a Christopher Neil, que introdujo sintetizadores y caja de ritmos. Sonaba diferente, más frío, más de los ochenta. El álbum no vendió bien y, según cuentan, Rafferty se lo tomó muy a pecho. Después de él desapareció seis años del panorama discográfico.
"The Right Moment" cierra el disco junto a "As Wise as a Serpent" y es de las canciones más emotivas que escribió. Una melodía aparentemente sencilla que sostiene todo su peso con la voz. La letra habla de esa trampa en la que todos caemos: esperar el momento perfecto para cambiar, mientras el tiempo pasa. "Now you know that it's all borrowed time, and still you waste another day."
Vale la pena escuchar también la versión que grabó Olivia Newton-John en su álbum "Soul Kiss" (1985). Su entonces marido, Matt Lattanzi, encontró la canción en el disco de Rafferty y se la llevó diciéndole que le ponía la piel de gallina. Y no le faltaba razón.
