"In the Air Tonight" fue el primer single de Phil Collins como solista, incluido en su álbum debut "Face Value" (1981), producido junto a Hugh Padgham. Llegó al número 2 en las listas británicas y al número 1 en países como Alemania, Austria, Suecia y Suiza.
La canción nació tras el divorcio de Collins de su primera esposa, Andrea Bertorelli. El propio Collins ha contado que escribió la letra de forma completamente espontánea, sin saber muy bien de qué trataba, aunque reconoce que refleja la rabia, la frustración y el desconcierto que sentía en ese momento.
Alrededor del tema circula una famosa leyenda urbana: que Collins presenció cómo alguien se ahogaba sin poder ayudarle, y que años después habría localizado a esa persona para cantarle la canción en directo. El propio artista ha desmentido esta historia en numerosas ocasiones, calificándola de pura invención.
El famoso break de batería que aparece a mitad de canción, con ese sonido tan característico logrado gracias al "gated reverb", se convirtió en uno de los momentos más reconocibles de la música pop de los 80 y ha sido imitado y sampleado infinidad de veces.
Sobre el significado de la letra: habla de una espera larga y cargada de tensión hacia un momento decisivo, casi como un ajuste de cuentas. El narrador se dirige a alguien que le ha traicionado o mentido, dejando claro que ya no está dispuesto a ayudarle ("Well, if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand"). Es la cara más amarga y airada de una ruptura.
Una versión destacable es la que interpretó en solitario, a piano y voz, en el Live Aid de 1985.
