Cameron Whitcomb es un cantautor canadiense de 23 años, nacido en Peace River (Alberta) y criado en Nanaimo, en la isla de Vancouver. Mezcla country, folk y rock con un estilo crudo y canciones sobre adicciones, salud mental y relaciones rotas. Su álbum debut, "The Hard Way" (2025), le valió un Juno a mejor álbum country en 2026.
"Kingdom of Fear" salió el 27 de marzo de 2026 como adelanto del EP "Deep Water". La escribió en su casa de Nanaimo con Jack Riley (que también la produjo) y Nolan Sipe, y la terminó en Nashville con Cal Shapiro. Se ha convertido en su mayor éxito: entró por primera vez en el Billboard Hot 100 de EE. UU. y llegó al puesto 3 en el Canadian Hot 100.
Curiosidad: el título no tiene nada que ver con la letra. Lo sacó de un libro de Hunter S. Thompson que estaba leyendo, "Kingdom of Fear", porque le parecía un título genial. Él mismo lo cuenta así: todos vivimos un poco en un reino del miedo, sea por ansiedad, depresión o lo que sea.
El videoclip es un desastre encadenado: un viaje por carretera que se tuerce con un atraco a una gasolinera de por medio, mientras Cameron mantiene una calma casi cómica. Es un reflejo de la idea de la canción: todo se cae a pedazos y aun así hay que seguir adelante.
Significado de la letra: el protagonista dice que está genial cuando le preguntan, pero por dentro no lo está. Vive asustado, evitando mirarse al espejo, y se ha ido construyendo muros demasiado altos. No quiere ser una carga para nadie ni ser el que llama cuando lo está pasando mal, así que se muerde la lengua y finge que todo va bien. Habla de ansiedad, salud mental y sobriedad sin dramatismos.
